Brightburn was a movie that I was really excited to watch when the trailer came out! Sadly I wasn't able to see it in the theatre but I finally got around to watching what I thought was going to be an interesting movie. Yet this movie was basically "what if Superman was evil" which is definitely an interesting alternative to the original superman but I've seen this same idea so many times.
Of course, Brightburn is much more mature than the other versions of this idea but it doesn't necessarily bring anything new or special to the table. A movie that centred itself around being unique and different was just generic, familiar and boring. It also doesn't help that the movie tries to focus on being scary but it really isn't. The majority of the movie is very predictable and due to that, it ruins all the build-up and suspense in most of the film. In terms of characters, this movie is also awful and generic.
The characters are boring and lack any characterization to make them actually stand out so you don't really care about anyone in this movie. It just feels like a movie and one you've probably seen many times before. Due to this huge disconnect between the characters and the audience you will probably find yourself bored and not really invested in the story or really entertained by it at all. Listen, I'm not saying this movie is horrible but it sucked to see a movie with so much potential end up being generic and boring.
Though from time to time Brightburn had some great moments, solid character designs for the main character, an interesting atmosphere and even some solid visuals the movie fails due to lack of an interesting and compelling story. On top of that the characters really due suck so it's hard to find something to actually emotionally connect to and because of that you will probably find yourself disconnected from the screen wondering when this uninteresting movie will finally come to an end. I wouldn't recommend this movie to people looking for a good story, interesting characters or even scary moments but if you like high action, boring dialogue and pointless gore then this may be the movie for you!
