Was This Movie Actually Entertaining? Happy Death Day 2U Movie Review!

Writer: Harland BanksHarland Banks

Happy Death Day 2U is an unexpectedly enjoyable sequel that finally found it's comedic footing. I personally didn't like the first Happy Death Day film at all, actually, the only good thing that happened while watching that movie in the theatre was my friend Cody throwing his popcorn after genuinely jumping from every jump scare and then me, him and Dylan trashing the movie after we watched it. Other than that the movie was boring, messy and had some pretty horrible writing so when I heard they were making a second one I wasn't really interested in watching it at all.

Yet somehow this movie actually managed to be both fun and even thrilling at times. This film works so well as a comedic horror this time around like I genuinely found myself laughing at many of the scenes and jokes in this movie. I also found most of the characters to be much more interesting and likeable this time around. The story was also handled way better and it felt like a lot more effort was put into this movie to make it a lot more entertaining and interesting. It also got a huge plus over the first one for actually making me feel emotionally invested in the characters and what has happened in the story. Unlike the first film, I didn't find myself constantly being bored and I genuinely enjoyed watching some of the crazy and unrealistic situations the characters found themselves in. Obviously, the movie is very predictable and at times that can take away from the fun of watching the movie.

The toning of this movie can be off at times and it kind of threw me off but the pacing was fantastic and really worked. I also loved the new angle they took in this movie with everyone being more conscious about the situation and taking control of it themselves. The twist was obvious but I thought the movie did a such a good job at developing the main character and having her actually slowly grow as the film went on instead of rushing it all at the end like they did the first time.

I also really enjoyed seeing the side characters from the first film getting a bigger part in this movie, I think they added a great element to this film especially from a comedic standpoint. Even with all these positives this movie still had some very cringeworthy scenes and at times felt hard to watch. With all that being said Happy Death Day 2U was truly a huge step up from the first Happy Death Day film thanks to the increase of quality in the writing.

The story was more interesting, the characters were more likeable, the pacing was fantastic and the movie was genuinely both funny and entertaining. But still Happy Death Day 2U does has a lot of flaws and at times can feel boring, messy, emotionally all over the place and though the movie was more comedy then anything it did lack that horror, suspenseful and at times the creative aspect you'd expect a movie like this to have. Plus the story was definitely very predictable and if you want this movie to take an unexpected turn then you will definitely be disappointed.
