The Dead Don't Die is very slow and it doesn't work at all. This 1hr and 40 minute film felt like it was nearly 2 and a half hours long. The movie starts off in an interesting way but then after they discover the first crime scene this movie really starts to drag along and starts really falling apart. I honestly can't think of any real redeeming things in this movie after that scene. I mean outside of Steve Buscemi and Caleb Landry Jones no one really added anything to this movie or were just really mediocre and boring. Really that's all this movie was, boring.
It is probably the most underwhelming zombie film ever made and that isn't necessarily a bad thing, actually if the movie was interesting and went into a more focused direction then the movie being so slowly placed probably would have been justified. Another big issue I had with this film is that it is very messy and unorganized. Not only did it have horrible pacing but the film had no sensible writing and every second it seemed like the movie was being taken into a new direction.
I also felt a huge emotional disconnect with the characters in this movie, I mean they went through the entire film emotionless so I started losing any connection or investment I had in the story and characters. Also, the movie had very little to no comedy in the sense that most of it really wasn't funny at all. I mean I had a couple laughs hers and there but most of the time I just felt bored out of my mind.
I also hate that this movie pretends like it has something to say but really they just threw in a bunch of shitty ambiguous lines that didn't actually make any sense to confuse audiences even more. Plus this film has multiple random twists that contradict each other and make absolutely no fucking sense. I seriously feel like I wasted my time watching this movie.
Part of the reason why I don't like this is because I expected more from this movie but it still doesn't change the fact that what the movie did give us just sucked. Also, this movie had a ton of useless and pointless characters that added nothing to the film which was actually kind of confusing because you would view the story through there perspective from time to time and it didn't actually add anything to the film. Also, it's crazy how they center the entire plot around a song that at times holds no actual relevance to the movie. Overall The Dead Don't Die has a few good moments but any potential this movie had to be good was ruined by horrible pacing and embarrassing writing. If the movie was actually funny it would at least have that one redeeming quality but personally, I just found the entire thing to be pretty pointless and humorous.
Not many characters or performances stood out in this movie which sucks because it had a star-studded cast and definitely had the potential to be entertaining at least from that aspect and the cast wasn't even able to bring the typical charisma and charm they are all capable of pulling off. I was really disappointed in the three lead roles who I expected a hell of a lot more from in this movie. Seriously The Dead Don't Die is extremely boring and I wouldn't recommend this movie to anyone.
