This Movie Was... Actually Pretty Good. Hustlers Movie Review!

So I just watched Hustlers last Sunday afternoon which is the first afternoon showing I've been to since I went to Green Book earlier this year! Sadly I had to watch the movie by myself but I actually think it didn't affect my experience at all. Based on the trailers I really wasn't expecting anything great and if it wasn't for the super positive feedback from Tiff I probably wouldn't have even bothered going to see this film in a theatre. Now after actually watching Hustlers I can say that not seeing this film would have been a huge mistake on my part. Hustlers is a really well-made film, that was well shot and well written.

The biggest problem I had with the film was it's pacing in the first half of the movie, it feels a little dragged out at times and your kind of just waiting for the climax of the film to hit because some of the backstories feels unnecessary but when the climax does hit Hustlers pretty much becomes flawless! The movie honestly has some pretty fantastic writing, it does a fantastic job at translating the characters and the story on screen. I also really liked how the movie was shot, the cinematography was great and the aesthetic of the film pretty much imprinted in my brain in a good way. The lighting and colouring were fantastic and at times felt like it added another visual element to the movie.

Jennifer Lopez was absolutely phenomenal and without a doubt delivered an Oscar level performance, from her accent to her dialogue delivery to her representation of her character, Jennifer Lopez fully embodied her role and was a huge scene-stealer. Constance Wu was also fantastic and I think the movie being through her perspective was perfect. The rest of the supporting cast like Keke Palmer and Lili Reinhart were also incredible and added another level of both comedic and emotional depth. Cardi B was also surprisingly great in her limited role in this movie! She took my full attention in a lot of the scenes she was in and I actually found her a necessary comic relief and entered the film perfectly.

Like I said earlier, the second half of this film is incredible, it has fantastic comedy, beautiful and realistic dialogue, it's high paced but doesn't feel rushed, does a great job at balancing all the important characters and showing their important roles in the event but most importantly it does something very important that glues this film together. That is even though you spend the entire first half of the movie sympathizing with the characters committing these crimes, in the second half of the film things turn up and they show the other aspect of these events, by showing the perspective of the people that get drugged it helps put the entire situation in your own perspective and you start sympathizing with the people affected by this crime even if they weren't all great people.

I was also completely invested in this movie through both my emotional aspect and my curiosity aspect! The movie does a great job of connecting the audience to the characters and the has a huge impact on your viewing experience. One thing I really liked about the first half of the film was how well handled the characters were handled and you could very easily see the home and work environment they were in both negatively and positively. The movie also surprisingly had a lot of heart and charm, this made a lot of moments in this film just fun to watch, it really was one of the most entertaining films of the year so far. Hustlers is a movie I could watch again and probably love it just as much the first time around. At the end of the day, Hustlers is a captivating, emotional, entertaining, well written and fun movie that uses everything to their advantage to make a great film!

This is a movie I wouldn't be shocked to see get some oscar buzz, especially from an acting perspective. The entire cast gave great performances but Jennifer Lopaz easily stands out after arguably delivering one of the best performances all year long despite sharing the screen with the talented Constance Wu who also delivered a great performance, Jennifer Lopaz still managed to stand out every single time she appears on screen! The movie is well edited, well shot, has great sound mixing and editing, I really can't think of many things I didn't like about this movie! I'd definitely recommend this movie to anyone who likes high paced, well written and well crafted captivating true stories translated perfectly onto the screen!
