Is This Movie As Bad As People Say It Is? Monsters University Movie Review!

Writer's picture: Harland BanksHarland Banks

I remember watching Monsters University in the theatre when it first came out and I remember loving this movie, though it isn't nearly as good as I remember it being Monsters University is still an interesting, sometimes funny character story that allows us to dive deeper in the Monsters universe.

The one thing I really liked about this movie was that it was really centred around Mike Wazowski, I mean he was a great and interesting character in Monsters Inc so seeing him get a bigger role and learning more about the character and his past was definitely interesting. The main problem I had with the movie was that it didn't really expand on the ideas or story that Monsters Inc had, I think that it was kind of just unnecessary and it didn't make me view Monsters Inc in a different way at all. I really view the two movies separately because they don't feel like they fit together. I did like some of the setups and references the film had, there were definitely some fun and memorable moments I just don't think it means nearly as much to me as Monsters Inc does and it just feels like it was made because they felt like they needed to make something.

Everything else about the movie was obviously on point, the animation was great and lively, the voice acting was amazing, the characters were fun and easy to connect with and the design and style of the film were solid. I think the biggest problem with the movie is that it isn't as easy to connect with from an emotional standpoint and it feels much less mature compared to Monsters Inc. It doesn't really seem to deal with any mature or more relevant themes. The toning of the movie was great and perfectly matched what the film was going for, I did enjoy the effort put into the idea of the monsters world like the history and all the new additions to the universe. That's one of the reasons why I did like this movie was because we got to learn more about the universe.

At the end of the day, Monsters University was a fun, charming film with a lot of heart but doesn't really compare to the original Monsters Inc. It has a lot of interesting ideas but the entire film just feels unnecessary and I personally believe we would have just been better off with a sequel instead. I did like a lot of the references to the original and a lot of the new additions to the history of the monsters universe and I liked the new characters introduced but at the end of the day, I still feel like if this movie didn't exist it just wouldn't make much of a difference.
