A Racing Film That's About More Than Just Racing? Ford V Ferrari Movie Review!

Writer: Harland BanksHarland Banks

Plot- American automotive designer Carroll Shelby and fearless British race car driver Ken Miles battle corporate interference, the laws of physics and their own personal demons to build a revolutionary vehicle for the Ford Motor Co. Together, they plan to compete against the race cars of Enzo Ferrari at the 24 Hours of Le Mans in France in 1966.

When I first heard about Ford V Ferrari it looked interesting but it wasn't something I felt like I needed to watch right away but as we got closer to the release date the more excited I got for the film. People were constantly telling me how great this film was and how I needed to watch it. Luckily thanks to the generous Tusket Ford who hosted a giveaway and screening of the film I actually got to watch this movie!

I've taken about two weeks to think about this movie because I actually found it difficult to sort my thoughts out initially after watching the film, in the moment I loved it and thought it was nearly perfect but the more and more I thought about it the more issues I started to have with the film. Like the movie is beautifully shot, it's stunning cinematography really complimented the amazing editing this film is rich with. In terms of videography, this movie is pretty much flawless, the lighting is perfect and each scene is styled to perfection and the movie just looks like nothing else I've seen this year. The directing is on point and the camera work is truly phenomenal, the great camera work makes for stunning intense scenes that wouldn't have felt as exciting if they were handled differently.

The story was surprisingly quite engaging and much more interesting than expected. I knew it was probably going to be a big exciting film full of action but most of the time the film was much more down to earth and serious. This movie could work as a family drama, a straight-up thrilling film about racing or even a film about reaching your highest goals and believing in your passion as a way to succeed. I think it's really rare to have a film that can work on many levels yet still being so coherent and focused. This is also a movie that can interest a vast amount of different audiences, the film has so many appealing factors that the movie can work for all different types of moviegoers for different reasons. My biggest worry going into this film was that due to my lack of knowledge involving these brands, the backstory and just cars in general that I wouldn't understand what was going on but for the most, the film does a great job at explaining what's going on why it's important so even if you aren't someone very educated on the topics this movie is still easy to follow and understand plus this isn't just a racing movie so there are many reasons to watch this film besides being a car head.

One thing I knew I could expect from this film was some great acting and this cast definitely delivered. Obviously, the two mains were the shining stars. Matt Damon delivers his arguably most impressive performance range and talent-wise since "The Martian" and Christan Bale adds on another fantastic performance to his career of brilliance. As great and enjoyable to watch as Matt Damon was the main standout was definitely Christan Bale who was just incredible. He was not only extremely likable but he had a much more difficult and in-depth role to play so leaving the movie you definitely feel his impact on the film a lot stronger than anyone else. He was also just incredibly believable and you could really see him melt into the character. Despite the amazing lead roles, this film didn't suffer from supporting performances. Actually, I can't even think of a single person that didn't have a fantastic performance. Everyone really added to this movie and you could just feel an impact from everyone throughout the film to go along with some amazing chemistry.

What's probably the most shocking aspect of this film is that despite all the issues they cover and all the important characters that are on screen this film never feels cluttered or clunky. They tell you everything important and manage to make the film actually flow really well, a big reason why is despite the two and a half hour runtime the films pacing and tones are consistent and complement the film perfectly so it feels like everything flys by quickly. A big part of this is because of the great writing, nothing feels out of place and none of the dialogue seems unrealistic so the filmmakers never give you a reason to tune out of the film at any moment. Thanks to all these great factors the film actually had some amazing character-building scenes which I honestly just wasn't expecting and were some of the best moments in the film. Once again even though this movie seems like it's primarily about racing it is so so much more than that and it just creates a fantastic film.

Despite all of these positives, Ford V Ferrari definitely does have some issues. The movie may flow really well and cover the most important issues from a historical perspective but it definitely has it's hiccups and mistakes. One problem I had is despite how great everything is the ending is pretty weak and doesn't do a great job at wrapping up some of the important character storylines. There is a lot more they could have and definitely should have shown with Christian Bales son and wife in the film and because of this despite the long yet unnoticeable 2 and half hour runtime the film still leaves you wanting more.

When I left the theatre my first issue with the film was that and I felt that it was a really lazy way to end everything and they could have easily added everything necessary from that emotional character perspective and made the film even three hours and it probably would've been a better-crafted film. This really sucked for me because of how well the film did at balancing everything up until this point, the last 10 minutes just could have been a lot better if more effort was put into showing more effects and perspectives of everything that happened. They did a great job of getting the audience connected and engaged to have a kind of let down ending. Other than that my only issue was the lack of character depth and explanation of the backstory for Matt Damon's character. They show a super thrilling and sick scene with the character to open the film and then it feels like they never properly extend that scene or handle it.

At the end of the day, Ford V Ferrari is a thrilling yet fun and emotional experience. The movie is beautifully filmed and everything on the technical aspect from the videography to the sound mixing was flawless. The two lead deliver some of there best performances yet in there long and luxurious careers. The chemistry they had was amazing and allowed the audience to really root for the two characters. The writing in this film, for the most part, was great, it covered a lot of important and interesting details filled with sad moments while also having some of the wittiest comedy this year. Ford V Ferrari is a movie you can watch by yourself, with your friends or with your family and still have a great time.

I think this is a movie that could speak to anyone and is something I think almost anyone would at least find interesting. Thanks to an amazing cast and an increase in tuned crew Ford V Ferrari may be one of the best films to come out all year. The direction is great and though the movie has some pretty big issues especially towards the end of the film they do a lot more right then they do wrong and because of that Ford V Ferrari is truly a fun and emotional ride that anyone could at least be entertained by. I'd definitely recommend this film to anyone that loves biopics, dramas, buddy comedies or racing thrillers. This movie really has something special about it and I think a lot of people would agree with me on that. Rating: 9/10
